Newry City will host the largest Royal Black Institution’s 'Last Saturday' demonstration on 29 August 2026, a premier cultural and heritage event designed to be enjoyed by both participants and a large expected crowd of spectators. The event will also be a significant ‘Flagship’ regional event as it will be one of the largest cultural pageants on the island of Ireland in 2026. We are confident that we will attract an estimated 5,000 participants from the 13 County Down Districts, including approximately 100 bands and then over 5,000 spectators on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The event will showcase Newry as a unique, inclusive cultural destination through the high-class band music and pageantry, generating positive regional media coverage that has Newry central to this key tourism event. The size and spectacle of the event will also attract cultural and music tourists from across Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and the Republic of Ireland.
Locally the event will provide a high-profile, large-scale platform for the public expression of the Protestant/Unionist cultural tradition in Newry City, a city that rarely hosts an event of this type or magnitude (it was last held in Newry in 2011). This directly aligns with the Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s aim to support diverse cultural identity by ensuring a significant and inclusive celebration of cultural heritage and community fellowship is accessible to residents of the NMDD area.
The event itself is being organised by Newry Royal Black District No.4. Their Organising Committee also include ‘County’ Down representatives, the PSNI and Translink.
Route
The main procession will move from the Assembly Area at Newry High School through the city centre streets to the Demonstration Field near Shandon Park, where a religious service, chaired by the County Down Grand Master, will be held. We estimate it will take over 2 hours to pass any one point. The event also actively promotes the Institution’s core Christian ethos and charitable outreach, reinforcing community spirit.
